A 53-year-old elephant rescued from the devastating floods in Nagaland has been brought safely to Bantara in Jamnagar, Gujarat, for care and rehabilitation. The elephant was among the animals affected by the severe flooding that disrupted several parts of the northeastern state.
The rescue operation highlights the growing need for specialised wildlife treatment and rehabilitation facilities to protect animals during natural disasters. Authorities and wildlife experts have been working to ensure the rescued elephant receives proper medical attention, nutrition and a safe environment.
Meanwhile, plans have been proposed to establish three wildlife treatment centres in Assam. The proposed facilities are expected to strengthen the state’s capacity to provide emergency treatment and rehabilitation for injured, stranded and rescued wild animals.
The initiative could play an important role in wildlife conservation, particularly during floods and other natural disasters that frequently affect Assam and the wider Northeast.
